What are the benefits for me as a homeowner?
- The system is fully funded by BCE, so there’s no upfront cost.
- You’ll pay less for energy than you do now by having access to free solar energy and cheap rate energy from the battery.
- You’ll still pay your energy supplier for what you use from the Grid. You’ll also pay a monthly service charge to BCE, but the monthly payment will be set at a fixed amount which is less than the savings you make on your normal energy bills.
- You start saving money on energy from the moment your system is commissioned.
- The system will be owned and maintained by BCE, so you won’t have additional costs.
What type of house can have this service?
Your home will need to:
- Be located in Buckinghamshire.
- Be owned and occupied by you.
- Have concrete tiles or flat roof with room for 5kW of solar panels unimpeded by trees, dormers, chimneys etc. Unfortunately we cannot offer Energise Buckinghamshire installations to homes with slate, thatched or heritage roofs or which are on a listed building. We may be able to install in a conservation area if there’s a suitable roof facing away from the highway.
- Have space for the battery in either a garage or on an external wall.
- Ideally, be in a street with one or more homes which would like to join Energise Buckinghamshire.
This is a long-term agreement based on trust – our solar and battery system will be providing a service to you or whoever lives in your home for the next 25 years at least. BCE is an asset-locked, community benefit society, so you can rest assured that we will be by your side for the duration of the contract we have with you, and that our partnership will be mutually beneficial because we are owned by our community for the benefit of our community.
How is Energise Buckinghamshire funded?
This project is community-funded, by people like you as well as social impact investors. You can invest from £100 up to £100,000 to help us reach our target of £2.3m so we can install 200 Energise Buckinghamshire systems over the next two years. This will give us a forecast 4.2MW of solar generation and battery storage combined by the end of 2028. The community share offer is targeting an annual 5% return for investors. Find out more and support the Community Share Offer here!
Who’s involved in the project?
Led by the BCE board and our Members, we’re working with award winning local solar installer Kimble Solar and UK battery manufacturer Energy2. BCE also benefits from the support and expertise of community energy network groups such as Community Energy Pathways. We work closely with local community groups and Parish Councils.

Invest in BCE and Energise Buckinghamshire:
I’m interested! How do I apply?
If you are interested, please fill in this Initial Application / Expression of Interest form, with details about your home and energy use. There’s no commitment at this stage. When we’ve received your application, the next steps are:
- Step 1: We’ll carry out a desktop survey of your home to check that it’s suitable for solar panels and meets the Energise Buckinghamshire requirements.
- Step 2: Our partner installer will contact you to arrange a home survey. They will visit your home and check the roof, electrics, and plan where to put the battery.
- Step 3: We will then put together a Proposal for you, outlining your likely estimated annual energy bill savings and your monthly payment, and send it with a Customer Service Agreement for you to sign if you wish to join the scheme.
- Step 4: Once you have signed the Customer Service Agreement, you will have 14 days to cancel if you change your mind. In the meantime, we will apply to the DNO for permission to connect, and set a date for installation after the 14 days cooling off period.
- Step 5: We anticipate that the lead time for installation from signing of the agreement will be around six weeks, but we will communicate with you as soon as we have firm dates and the installation will be booked for a date that suits both you and the installer.

Frequently Asked Questions
Click on the questions listed below to get answers to further questions you may have about Energise Buckinghamshire. If there is anything you need to know that’s not covered on this page, please email info@buckscommunityenergy.org
What kind of solar and home battery system will be installed?
You will be provided with a 5kW solar array to supply free energy during the day, and a 16kW battery of which you will be able to use 5kW. The remaining battery capacity (11kW) will be controlled and optimised by Buckinghamshire Community Energy to provide flexibility services to the Grid and to provide a return to investors.
Who owns the equipment?
Buckinghamshire Community Energy will own, control and maintain the equipment. However, this does not constitute a lease or rental of your roof. It is more like a broadband subscription, where the supplier provides cabling and routers to you for the duration of your service contract, and you must return the equipment to them if you cancel the agreement.
What if I want to stop using it or move house?
This service is for homeowners who intend to live in their home and use the solar and home battery system for at least the next five years.
If you are not happy with this commitment, or if you know you will be moving house within five years, please do not sign up for Energise Buckinghamshire as this presents an additional cost and risk to the project if your buyer does not want to retain the system.
If you need to repair your roof or have other reasonable requirements for us to remove the system, we will do so – please see the Terms and Conditions of the Customer Service Agreement (you will get this with your Proposal from Energise Buckinghamshire if your application is successful) for circumstances under which we will remove the system at your request and at no cost to you.
However, if you know you need to repair your roof in the next five years, why not talk to us about getting inline solar panels as part of your roof repairs? It will save you money on tiles!
If you move house, we ask that you connect us with your house buyer so that we can transfer the contract to them, if they are willing. If they are not willing, we will remove the system.
After 20 years, the system can be removed by us, or you (or whoever lives in your house after that time!) can opt to keep it and use it for free for the rest of its useful life.
What if I need to repair my roof or remove the solar panels for some other reason?
If you need to repair your roof or have other reasonable requirements for us to remove the system, we will do so – please see the Terms and Conditions of the Customer Service Agreement (you will get this with your Proposal from Energise Buckinghamshire if your application is successful) for circumstances under which we will remove the system at your request and at no cost to you.
However, if you already know you need to repair your roof in the next five years, why not talk to us about getting inline solar panels as part of your roof repairs? It will save you money on tiles!
How long will I pay the monthly service charge for?
The Customer Service Agreement will be a long-term commitment of up to 20 years between Buckinghamshire Community Energy and you as an Energise Buckinghamshire homeowner. However, the monthly payment will not go up without discussion with you as the “customer” beforehand (for example, if you increase your energy use and need to use more of the battery storage to save money), and it may go down during the lifetime of the system.
It will end after 20 years and you, or whoever owns your house, will have the option to take the system over, own it and maintain it, using the energy it generates or provides free of charge for the remaining life of the system.
The intention is to provide an asset which saves you money on energy and adds value to your home by cutting running costs over the long-term.
What happens if the system stops working?
Buckinghamshire Community Energy is responsible for keeping the system working. We will monitor the systems on a monthly basis, but if you notice that it is not generating or there is a problem with the battery providing power, then we will expect you to notify us. If we notice it first, then we will notify you and provide a timescale for diagnosis of the problem and repair.
If it stops working and we cannot get it repaired within a month, then we will waive your monthly payment until it is up and running again.
If there is a wholesale failure of the system and the whole thing needs to be replaced, we will tell you what the schedule is for replacement, and will waive payments until you have access to the solar and battery power again.
How much am I likely to save on energy bills by having this system?
We will ask you to provide us with access to your half hourly data from your energy supplier and then we will model your likely savings with the solar and battery system we are providing. An example of the modelling is here. This is for an average 4-bedroom, 4-person family home. The modelling shows that the electricity bill is likely to be around £1,200 a year, but with the solar and battery, that would come down to around £15 a year. So even with a monthly payment to BCE for the use of the solar and battery of £60 a month, this family would save around £500 a year. Please note though that this model assumes that you switch to the optimal tariff for your home, and advice on doing this can be provided by our partner Below Zero Energy as part of our service.
We are also currently working on other options because not all tariffs are still available (due to the Iran War and energy market volatility), however, we will agree a monthly payment with you as part of the Customer Service Agreement and that will only change if your energy use within the home changes due to adding an air source heat pump, EV or other electricity-demanding apparatus. At that point, we can discuss how to offer you the best option for your new usage profile.
